I am amazed at the praise heaped on this book, and the only reason I can come up with is Novak's previous books have all been consistently good. Perhaps that is one of the reasons this book was even more disappointing. Novak appears to be striving to branch out into the women's fiction genre more capably handled by authors such as Kristen Hannah. Unfortunately she also decided to combine three books in one and didn't really do justice to any of them. Each of the three subplots dealt with multiple histrionic life events for the main character, her mother and teenaged daughter. This was one of those books that you just wanted to come to an end. Obviously Novak felt the same way because she just stopped writing it. I sat in disbelief that there was no resolution to anybody's story. To say the least I felt cheated. I found out yesterday that anyone who participated in Novak's online chat scheduled for 4/13/21 would receive a 12 page "epilogue" which, I suppose, tied up the storylines. I guess she found it after she turned in the original manuscript and it was to late to include it. All I can say is I feel doubly cheated now. No doubt the epilogue will be included when the book is republished in a year or so with a new cover and retitled. First , I do normally love Brenda Novak books having read quite a few. I pre-ordered this book and have been anxiously waiting its release. That's why its difficult for me to give it only 3 stars. The story deals with basically four issues; 1. a husband who goes missing, 2. a woman who was abused for seven years, 3. falling in love with a wonderful man from the past, and 4. teenage sexuality. The majority of the book deals with the teenage sexuality. I felt like I was reading a Young Adult book most of the time. Very little time was spent on the missing husband. The poor woman who had been abused was given equal or less time than the teenage issues. The new love was given a good amount of time. Which leads to my next disappointment. Unfortunately, this new love had no spicy interactions to speak of. He'd spend the night. That was the end of the description there. The words breast and nipple were mentioned two or three times. The teenage love life actually had about the same amount of sexual description. My expectation was to read a love story with a little spice & few twists and turns to keep it interesting. Instead I got a story primarily about teenage love and angst. If was frustrating as I was expecting so much more. At one point I even reread the description of the book on Amazon. I thought I had made a mistake and it was truly labeled as Young Adult. Could have been so much better.
